Constructing America - a photo series
My work revolves around the idea of construction, both physical and ideological. As a Ukrainian immigrant my sense of construction is informed by an experience of manual labour (literally working in construction jobs) and education (my degree in American Studies). These poles establish the parameters of my process. America constantly creates and updates models for itself and others to follow. This continuous building is not about finishing, but being constantly active. As a result, life becomes about a process of building rather than outcome, and construction becomes the definition of life. With this series I am not interested in capturing a 'realistic' photographic portrayal of something that is being built but rather in constructing an image of that process from whatever sources I have captured. As I document and analyze different fields, my work is to come up with a new understanding of how complex systems work.
